Now sold out at the distillery and almost everywhere else as well, this limited-edition Oxford Rye Whisky is likely ot become highly collectible… The Oxford Artisan Distillery wanted to "bring you to Oxford" with this fresh and floral whisky. So, inspired by the local fields, old libraries and the Port being sipped at the university, they created Oxford Rye Whisky Batch #2. The ancient heritage rye, wheat and oat grains were harvested in 2017 and slowly fermented in Hungarian oak in the spring of 2018. Following distillation, the spirit was matured in first-fill American oak and freshly emptied Vintage Port casks. The warmer weather during fermentation adds a rich tropical note to the butterscotch, walnut baklava, creamy praline, sourdough, caramelised banana bread, herbs and peppery spices of the whisky, while the Port influence imparts notes of dried fruits, raisins, hedgerow berry jam, tobacco and leatherbound books. It's truly mesmerising stuff and completely unique as it will never be repeated. The Oxford Artisan Distillery opened its doors in the summer of 2017, and unbelievably it marked the first legal distillation in the city's history. The team are fascinated by heritage grains, sustainable farming and a grain-to-glass ethos. They're not interested in homogenous, commercial, bought-in-bulk seeds grown in the opposite of a natural ecosystem. So, they took influence from wheat and rye discovered in Medieval thatched roofs, which lead them to discover what would have been grown in the local area during ancient times. They then work with organic farms that use no pesticides, fungicides, chemical fertilisers or manure, and who undersow their crops with clover. As a result, the fields are brimming with wildflowers, insects, birds and biodiversity. Now that's an eco-friendly spirit that this country can be very proud of.£17.14 per 100.00ml
